Introduction: Why HVAC Problems Are So Common

If you’re searching for air conditioning repair in Granger, Indiana, you’re probably already dealing with an uncomfortable home or business. HVAC systems are complex machines—made up of electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant components that work hard year-round.

Over time, wear and tear, dirty filters, or just plain old age can create problems. The good news? Most HVAC problems are common and have proven solutions.

Whether you’re facing a system that won’t turn on, uneven cooling, or strange noises, understanding the most common HVAC repair issues can help you take action quickly—and even prevent bigger problems down the road.

Understanding Your HVAC System: The Basics

Before diving into specific HVAC repair issues, it helps to know the basics:

• HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.

• Common components:

• Furnace or Air Handler: Heats and moves air.

• AC Compressor & Condenser: Cools air and removes humidity.

• Evaporator Coil: Located inside your home, absorbs heat.

• Ductwork: Delivers conditioned air.

• Thermostat: Controls the system.

10 Most Common HVAC Problems and Solutions

Let’s break down the top 10 most frequent HVAC issues, what causes them, and how they can be fixed.

1. AC Not Cooling Properly

Symptoms:

• Warm air blowing from vents

• Rooms not reaching set temperature

Causes:

• Low refrigerant levels

• Dirty air filters

• Blocked condenser unit

• Thermostat issues

Solutions:

• Check air filter: Replace if dirty.

• Inspect outdoor unit: Remove debris, trim back plants.

• Call a professional: For refrigerant issues or compressor problems, contact an HVAC technician.

Expert Tip:

“Low refrigerant isn’t a ‘top off’ situation—it usually means there’s a leak that needs to be found and fixed by a pro.”

2. HVAC Unit Won’t Turn On

Symptoms:

• No air from vents

• Thermostat display is blank

Causes:

• Tripped breaker or blown fuse

• Loose or faulty wiring

• Thermostat malfunction

• Safety switch engaged

Solutions:

• Check breaker box: Reset if needed.

• Inspect thermostat: Replace batteries.

• Check shutoff switches: Some units have outdoor shutoff switches that may get bumped.

• Call for service: Electrical and wiring issues are best handled by licensed professionals.

3. Poor Airflow

Symptoms:

• Weak air from vents

• Hot or cold spots in rooms

Causes:

• Dirty air filters

• Blocked or leaking ducts

• Blower motor problems

Solutions:

• Replace filters regularly: Every 1-3 months is standard.

• Check vents and ducts: Make sure furniture isn’t blocking airflow.

• Call for duct inspection: Leaks or collapsed ducts may need professional repair.

4. Strange Noises or Smells

Symptoms:

• Banging, squealing, or rattling sounds

• Musty, burning, or chemical odors

Causes:

• Loose or broken parts

• Motor issues

• Mold or mildew in ducts

Solutions:

• Turn off the unit: Unusual noises can mean loose or failing parts.

• Have the system inspected: A qualified HVAC technician can safely diagnose the issue.

Common HVAC Problems and Solutions often start with noticing something unusual—trust your senses!

5. Frozen Evaporator Coils

Symptoms:

• Ice or frost on indoor unit

• Weak or no airflow

Causes:

• Restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked vent)

• Low refrigerant

• Running AC with doors/windows open

Solutions:

• Turn off the system: Allow coils to thaw.

• Replace filter: Restore airflow.

• Call for repair: If coils keep freezing, you may have a refrigerant leak or airflow issue.

6. Thermostat Malfunctions

Symptoms:

• System won’t respond to temperature changes

• Unit cycles on and off rapidly

Causes:

• Dead batteries

• Old or faulty thermostat

• Poor placement (next to a heat source or in direct sunlight)

Solutions:

• Change batteries: Easy DIY fix.

• Recalibrate or replace thermostat: Especially for older units, upgrade to a smart thermostat for better control.

• Call a pro: If problems persist.

7. Refrigerant Leaks

Symptoms:

• AC not cooling efficiently

• Hissing sounds from the unit

• Ice on refrigerant lines

Causes:

• Wear and tear on refrigerant lines

• Factory defects

• Vibration damage

Solutions:

• Call an HVAC technician: Refrigerant is regulated by the EPA and must be handled by a licensed pro.

• Don’t ignore leaks: Low refrigerant reduces efficiency and can cause compressor failure.

8. Clogged or Dirty Filters

Symptoms:

• Poor airflow

• Increased energy bills

• System short cycling

Causes:

• Forgetting to change filters

• Using incorrect filter size or type

Solutions:

• Replace or clean filters regularly: Every 1-3 months (more often with pets/allergies).

• Mark your calendar: Set a recurring reminder.

9. Drainage Problems

Symptoms:

• Water pooling around unit

• Musty smell or humidity issues

Causes:

• Clogged condensate drain line

• Rusted drain pan

• Improper installation

Solutions:

• Clear the drain line: Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove clogs.

• Schedule maintenance: Annual tune-ups catch these issues before they cause water damage.

10. Electrical Issues and Blown Fuses

Symptoms:

• System shuts off unexpectedly

• Frequent breaker trips

Causes:

• Power surges (thunderstorms are common in Granger!)

• Aging wiring or loose connections

• Overloaded circuits

Solutions:

• Reset breaker: If it trips again, call an expert.

• Have wiring inspected: Safety first—don’t DIY electrical issues.
